Map search functionality on website
We use a 3rd party to provide the functionality and data sourced by Geofutures Ltd for use in the Stop the FOBTs searchable map. Political boundaries (Westminster constituencies) used on this map are sourced from the Ordnance Survey Boundary Line dataset for May 2012. The Member of Parliament and their political party have been ascribed to each constituency record, using the results of the 2010 election and including the results of by-elections up to April 2012.
Betting shop locations are sourced from the Gambling Commission ‘premises register’ for May 2012. Betting shop gambling premises were included in this study and geocoded to the unit postcode. A small number of betting shop records were incomplete and could not be geocoded to a location in space. In some cases there is more than one venue within a postcode, which is reflected in the online mapping. Summary counts of betting shop locations within constituencies by political party were calculated by Geofutures. Base map data is copyright Google Maps.
All sources including Geofutures Ltd must be quoted if these data or visualisations are reproduced.
Whilst every care has been taken by Geofutures Ltd in the processing and visualisation of these datasets, errors resulting from source data errors cannot be our responsibility. Geofutures is an independent data analysis consultancy and has no political or campaigning affiliation.
All financial data regarding FOBTs used in the search results was supplied by the Campaign for Fairer Gambling. The analysis of the data is based on a best estimate and has a margin of error of less than 2%. A full breakdown on the analysis is available here: Analysis of 2012 Industry Statistics on Fixed Odds Betting Terminals.
